Walter
by Walter Software Corporation
Walter is a legal AI agent built to operate where legal work is actually in motion — your inbox and your document management system. Unlike first-generation AI tools that live inside Word and require constant human-in-the-loop editing, Walter follows a Gen2 “delegate-and-review” model. You assign a task, it works asynchronously in the background, and you review the results — mirroring how lawyers, paralegals, and legal teams work with human colleagues.
From Outlook, Walter has full visibility into the entire email thread, its attachments, and related matter files. This context awareness allows it to:
- Review documents against a playbook, automatically flagging deviations from precedent.
- Prepare and customize client documents, such as a financing term sheet or NDA, from your firm’s own precedents.
- Draft agreements using prior work product and deal specifics.
- Draft polished responses that reference relevant facts and, when needed, generate tracked-change or comparison documents in the background.
Walter integrates with iManage to draw from approved precedent libraries, reference prior matters, and save updated versions automatically. It can also edit Microsoft Word documents directly, maintain formatting consistency, and run comparisons without requiring separate blackline creation.
The AI agent is connected to Walter’s broader legal platform, providing secure access to live cap tables, stakeholder records, and transaction histories. This integration helps ensure that documents and communications reflect current data without manual updates. Combined with document automation, e-signature, and collaboration tools, the platform supports drafting, review, and negotiation processes in a more streamlined and consistent way.
Walter functions as more than a drafting tool; it is designed to support legal teams in organizing tasks, prioritizing work, and delegating effectively, beginning from the primary point of legal workflow — the inbox.
Walter was formerly known as Minutebook and changed their name in August 2023.
