Overview

Good Minutes is a desktop practice management tool designed for lawyers, independent consultants, and freelancers who require client management, time recording, and invoicing without the cost or infrastructure dependency of enterprise-grade platforms. All data is stored locally on the user's machine; no cloud sync or account is required for core functionality.

Key features and functions include:

Client Register Stores contacts with associated billing rates, tax settings, project budgets, and notes. Default billing rates cascade to linked projects, and aggregate time and billing data are accessible per contact. Available in the Pro tier.

Passive Activity Monitoring Polls the active window every five seconds to build thirty-second activity slices, recording app name, window title, and browser URL. A four-component intensity score distinguishes active work from idle periods. No keystrokes, screenshots, or clipboard content are captured. Available in the free tier.

Three-Layer Time Classification Applies a sequential classification process: keyword rules for explicit matches, a 23 MB on-device semantic model for meaning-based project matching, and an optional LLM layer that generates professional billing narratives. The first two layers run locally and are included in the free tier; the LLM narrative layer is a Pro feature.

Living Chronogram Displays a real-time, color-coded visual timeline of the working day with intensity scoring and a drag-to-create entry interface. Free-tier users have access to a seven-day signal history; Pro extends this to thirty days.

Six-Minute Billing Increments Implements the legal industry standard of 1/10th-hour billing increments by default, with start times snapping down and end times snapping up. Additional increment options (10, 15, 30, and 60 minutes) are also supported. Available in the free tier.

Invoicing and LEDES Export Generates invoices in PDF format for standard client delivery and LEDES 1998BI format for corporate and insurance legal billing compliance. Available in the Pro tier.

AI Agent Access via Model Context Protocol (MCP) Exposes 22 tools to MCP-compatible AI assistants, including Claude Desktop and Cursor, over a localhost connection. The AI assistant can propose time entries from the day's activity feed, start timers, create entries by description, and respond to natural-language queries about clients, projects, and budgets. All data exchange occurs locally; no practice data is transmitted externally. Available in the Pro tier.
