Metadata Scrubbing

Metadata scrubbing tools remove or cleanse hidden metadata, such as author names, tracked changes, comments, or document properties, from files before they are shared outside the firm, reducing the risk of inadvertently disclosing confidential or privileged information. These tools are commonly used when sending documents to opposing counsel, courts, or clients, and are frequently integrated into email and document management systems so that scrubbing happens automatically or with a single click at the point of sending, rather than requiring a separate manual step. Many also function as a broader data loss prevention layer, flagging suspicious recipients or attachments, letting users reorder, rename, or bind files before sending, and giving IT teams oversight and reporting across the firm's email activity. As lawyers increasingly use generative AI tools to analyze or summarize documents, metadata scrubbing is also being used earlier in the workflow, stripping hidden metadata and personally identifiable information from a document before it is uploaded to an AI system rather than only before external delivery. Some tools now support this locally on a device with no cloud processing, giving firms a way to use AI on sensitive documents while keeping the underlying content from ever leaving their environment.
