eBilling software is a digital platform that enables law firms to submit invoices, most often in the LEDES standard, and corporate legal departments to review, code, and audit those invoices electronically. Firms submit invoices along with timekeeper names, rates, and supporting documentation through a central platform or third-party vendor portal, while clients review incoming bills against their own billing codes and budgets, often within their own matter or spend management systems. This replaces the paper or PDF invoices that were historically difficult for clients to analyze line by line. eBilling platforms flag rate or billing guideline violations before invoices are submitted, reducing rejected bills and write-offs on both sides of the relationship. Increasingly, AI-assisted validation checks invoice line items against outside counsel guidelines automatically, catching errors that would otherwise surface only after a client's manual review, and giving both firms and legal departments real time visibility into invoice and payment status.
