Law Firm Operations/BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Business Development

Business development and marketing technology overlaps substantially with broader marketing technology used across industries, but certain functions are specific to the legal context. These tools typically sit on top of or alongside a CRM, adding legal specific capabilities such as relationship intelligence that maps connections across client contacts and referral sources, whitespace analysis that surfaces cross sell opportunities within existing clients, campaign and event management, and marketing automation for email and outreach. Business development is distinct from Pitches and Proposals, which covers producing and tracking the response documents themselves, whereas business development tools support the broader relationship and opportunity management that precedes and surrounds those responses, including pipeline tracking and analysis of which practice areas or client relationships are driving growth. It also differs from CRM more generally in its legal specific focus on experience data, referral relationships, and practice group cross-selling, rather than generic contact and deal management. Generative AI is increasingly used to automate whitespace analysis, generate attorney experience briefs and matter summaries from firm data, and surface relationship insights that would otherwise require manual research across matter and contact records.
