Overview

Stella is an open-source legal workspace for document review, drafting, and research.

Tabular review
Run extraction prompts across hundreds or thousands of documents and collect the results in a structured table: parties, governing law, term, renewal mechanics, payment terms, indemnities, deviations from a playbook, or any custom field. Each cell links back to the source passage in the original document, and the table exports to CSV or XLSX. Used for due diligence, contract repapering, and large-volume audits.

DOCX editing
Documents open in a native in-browser DOCX editor; there is no round-trip to Word. The editor handles tracked changes, comments, footnotes, headers, footers, and tables. Redlines can be extracted from a comparison and applied selectively. An AI drafting assistant edits the open document and proposes changes as suggestions the user can accept or reject.

Legal research
Case-law and statute search with cited sources. Answers point at the exact paragraph in the cited authority, and the underlying text is one click away. Designed to avoid fabricated citations.

Deployment and openness
Self-host via Docker with a PostgreSQL backend and S3-compatible object storage, or use the managed cloud. Source code, database schema, and APIs are public and permissively licensed. Firms retain full ownership of their data, can export everything at any time, and can audit or extend the application directly.
