Court Rules
Court Rules is a free legal research platform that organizes procedural requirements for U.S. federal and state courts, including individual federal judges’ standing orders, local rules, and court holiday calendars, alongside a separate database of privacy enforcement actions.
Key features and functions include:
Judge and Court Rule Search
Users can search by judge, court, or rule topic to find page and word limits, courtesy-copy requirements, pre-motion conference procedures, formatting rules, e-filing procedures, and other chambers-specific practices. Each rule links to the specific page of its source document.
Deadline Calculator
Calculates filing deadlines by counting calendar days, business days, or court days from a given date and applies the holiday calendar for the selected court. Separate calculators are offered for general court-day calculations and for deadlines under the federal rules specifically.
Court Holiday Calendars
Provides closure calendars for covered federal and state courts.
Rules-by-Topic Comparison
Allows users to compare how a single rule type, such as page limits or sealing procedures, is handled across different courts and judges.
Privacy Enforcement Tracker
Maintains a structured database of privacy enforcement actions from the FTC, HHS Office for Civil Rights, and state attorneys general, recording the entity, fine amount, violation type, laws cited, and a link to the government source. Each event is also tagged with contract-clause search terms intended to help legal teams audit vendor agreements for related gaps.
Document Compliance Check
Through the API, a filing can be uploaded and a judge specified; the system classifies the document type, counts pages and words, and checks it against that judge’s applicable rules, returning a pass, fail, or action-required result for each rule.
API and MCP Server Access
A REST API and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server expose the same data for integration into legal technology products and AI assistants, including Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and Codex CLI. The website itself requires no account; API and MCP use require a user or developer account.
