CounselGuard
CounselGuard is an AI compliance and governance platform built for law firms and in-house legal teams that need to document and enforce their use of artificial intelligence in accordance with applicable professional responsibility obligations. The platform operates at the governance and audit layer above the AI tools a firm already uses, and does not require integration with any of those tools.
Key features and functions include:
Activity Monitoring
A desktop agent and browser extensions for Chrome and Edge detect AI usage across tools including ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Harvey, and others, including unsanctioned or shadow use. Each session is captured in real time and recorded in a tamper-evident, immutable audit log.
AI Tool Registry
A centralized registry catalogs AI tools with vendor assessments, security posture, monitored domains, and approved use cases. Each tool carries a status—approved, restricted, or prohibited—that the platform enforces.
Client and Matter Rules
Firms can apply rules that evaluate a prompt and any attached documents before submission to an AI tool. Rules can block submissions outright, restrict use by specific client, or restrict use by matter type. Client-level restrictions can override firm defaults, with exceptions recorded in the audit trail.
Compliance Framework Tracking
The platform maps firm controls to named professional responsibility obligations across jurisdictions, including ABA Formal Opinion 512 (United States), the FLSC Model Code (Canada), the Barreau du Québec Guide (Québec), the SRA Standards and Regulations (United Kingdom), the EU AI Act, Germany's BRAO, and France's RIN. Obligations are tracked at the jurisdiction and firm-wide level through a compliance dashboard.
Policy and Training Management
Supporting modules include a compliance checklist mapped by jurisdiction, policy document management with version control and approval workflows, and a training and certification tracker with CSV import capability.
Audit-Ready Reporting
The platform generates evidence packages for three audiences: internal leadership, clients, and regulators. An incident log and investigation tools are also included.
Client Trust Page
Firms can publish a branded trust page showing approved tools, policies, and governance frameworks, with access controls for client-facing visibility.
