Overview

CASUS is an AI-powered legal workspace software product for law firms and in-house legal teams in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Rather than functioning as a separate application, it operates within Microsoft Word and the browser, so drafting, review, and research take place directly in the working document.

Key features and functions include:

AI Chat
Allows users to ask questions about an open document in natural language, with answers linked to the relevant passage. An agent mode can execute edits directly in the document — inserting clauses, rephrasing text, or adjusting language for a party's position — while preserving structure, numbering, and formatting.

Risk Review
Analyzes a contract for risks and weaknesses from the perspective of a specified contracting party. Findings include an attribution, a relevance assessment, and a severity rating of low, medium, or high, along with wording alternatives that can be applied in Word.

Benchmark
Compares a document against a reference standard, such as an internal playbook or a market-standard agreement (e.g., SPA, NDA, DPA). It identifies missing or incomplete clauses and expresses overall alignment as a percentage.

Proofread
Reviews a document for spelling, grammar, cross-references, undefined terms, missing annexes, numbering and heading inconsistencies, contradictory deadlines, and open placeholders, without altering legal meaning.

Translation and Anonymization
Translation runs within the Word add-in and is designed to preserve formatting and legal meaning. An anonymization function removes personal data from a document before it leaves the firm.

Dossiers
Enables users to work across collections of up to 100 documents at once, comparing provisions and tracing answers to source material; context persists across chats without re-uploading files.

Legal Research
Draws on more than 1.8 million court decisions and statutory provisions from Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, returning structured, citation-linked results usable directly in drafting or analysis.

AI Data Room
Analyzes multiple documents in parallel and outputs a table with user-defined extraction fields, building a clause matrix across a document portfolio and flagging anomalies by risk; it also supports detection and anonymization of personal data prior to disclosure.

Security and Data Hosting
Customer data is hosted on Google Cloud in Switzerland (Zurich region), with AI inference limited to European locations (Google Vertex AI in Belgium; Microsoft Azure OpenAI in Switzerland North and Sweden Central). CASUS applies a zero-data-retention policy across model providers and encrypts data at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+), operating under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (revFADP) and GDPR.

Company Background
CASUS originated as a spin-off from the University of St. Gallen and has received support from Venture Kick and Innosuisse, the Swiss innovation agency.
