Redaction

Redaction solutions support the identification and removal of privileged, confidential, or otherwise protected information from documents before they are produced, filed, or shared. These tools help legal teams locate sensitive content, such as personally identifiable information, privileged communications, or trade secrets, and apply redactions consistently across large volumes of documents. Many solutions now use AI to help identify potentially sensitive content that may otherwise be missed in manual review, flagging it for attorney confirmation before redaction is applied. A key differentiator is whether redaction permanently removes the underlying text and metadata or merely overlays a visual mask, since the latter can leave content recoverable through copying or extraction. Redaction capabilities are often built into eDiscovery review platforms and document production tools, though standalone solutions also exist, including ones that can apply redactions directly to native file formats such as spreadsheets, rather than requiring conversion to image-based formats first. Some standalone tools also process documents locally on the user's device rather than in the cloud, and provide audit logs or tamper-evident verification certificates to confirm a redacted document has not been altered before it is shared.
