Book of Authorities

Book of authorities solutions automate the creation of a book or table of authorities from uploaded briefs or pleadings, extracting cited cases, statutes, and secondary sources and generating a properly formatted table rather than requiring manual compilation. In preparation for trial in certain jurisdictions, parties must file a book of authorities: a binder recording all cases cited in support of an argument, typically with brief summaries. In other jurisdictions, a table of authorities is required at the start of a brief, listing all caselaw, statutes, and secondary sources relied upon, along with the page numbers on which they appear. Many tools can update the table automatically as citations are added or removed later in the drafting process. Increasingly, these tools use AI to identify and format citations more accurately across varied citation styles and jurisdictions, converting between formats such as Bluebook and state-specific style manuals, and to verify that cited cases and statutes are genuine, which has become more important given the risk of fabricated citations from generative drafting tools. Many solutions also generate a hyperlinked version of the brief or book itself, letting a judge or co-counsel click directly through to the underlying source, reducing the manual proofreading historically required before filing.
