Legal operations in corporate legal departments is driving change in-house more than any other innovation. The rise of CLOC (Corporate Legal Operations Consortium) has had a profound impact on how in-house legal departments and their law firms operate. Legal operations professionals are responsible for legal technology, project management, hiring, panel selection and various related matters. Legal operations in law firms is also an increasing area of focus, with firms realizing that in order in remain competitive in the market they must improve the effectiveness of their internal operations. Many of the solutions in this space are human-based but more and more solutions arise that support legal operations.

Legal intake and triage are related but distinct processes. Legal intake involves the initial gathering of information and details about a legal issue or request. It typically occurs when someone submits a legal matter or request to the corporate legal department. This intake process helps capture essential information and initiate the appropriate response or actions.&nbsp;Triage refers to the prioritization and assessment of incoming legal matters. It involves evaluating the urgency, complexity, and potential impact of each matter to determine the appropriate course of action. Triage helps allocate resources effectively and ensures that matters are addressed in order of priority.

A legal hold is the process where a company has to retain files pending litigation or anticipated litigation, because they may be relevant to such litigation. Legal hold software is often embedded in or integrates with eDiscovery software. Law firms submit legal hold requests, monitor compliance with legal holds, interview custodians and track progress of requests. Law firms are also required to respond to legal hold requests when they are issued in relation to pending litigation involving the firm.

Sourcing pro bono work, administering hours invested, support of the work (which is often outside of the expertise of the lawyers involved), reporting, sometimes collaboration with clients and communicating with legal aid organizations takes considerable time for larger law firms and in-house departments. A recent entrant to the market Paladin has introduced an offering that covers most of the before-mentioned painpoints.

Pro Bono Management

Work allocation software supports allocation of work to associates and associate general counsel. It works based on a number of variables such as previous experience, the need for associates to build up a wide range of experience, diversity, rates and availabilty. Remote work arrangements make it difficult to allocate work as it was previously done because of physical separation. There is also sometimes a preference of a partner to work exclusively with the people they know to be good at a particular task. This can lead to associates being allocated the same type of work for years without gaining experience in other areas. Tools like Capacity, VI Utilize and Vantage by Bighand address these problems.

Corporate legal departments frequently retain more than one law firm. The multiple firms engaged to represent a client are referred to as the client's panel of firms, and corporate legal departments manage these relationships carefully, including by regularly reviewing their panels to determine whether they should be retaining new firms and eliminating certain existing firms from their panel. It is increasingly common for organizations to stipulate a set of key areas in which their panel firms must exel in order to retain their position on the panel, for example diversity and inclusion, technology and innovation. Panel management solutions support the management of ongoing panel firm relationships - including benchmarking performance - and the selection of new panel firms. Project management platforms leverage automation to allow legal teams to manage complex projects and juggle multiple projects, as well as facilitating the work of breaking projects into discrete tasks. Typically these solutions allow for the assignment and management of tasks, including assigning priorities, tracking progress, setting weekly, monthly, quarterly goals, and allowing team members to communicate within the platform. While there are various general-purpose project management tools (such as Asana, Smartsheet, Monday, etc.), project management tools specific to the legal industry have developed to support law firm matter teams as well as corporate legal departments. This category encompasses both. In recent years more law firms have recruited legal project managers to help partners deliver legal work on time and on budget.
