Legal Operations/ENTERPRISE LEGAL MANAGEMENT

Enterprise Legal Management

Enterprise legal management (ELM) is the operational framework and software category that in-house legal departments use to manage matters, control legal spend, and improve efficiency and visibility across the legal function, replacing the fragmented mix of email, spreadsheets, and disconnected tools most legal teams outgrow as they scale. Core components typically include matter management for tracking legal work end to end, eBilling and legal spend management for reviewing and validating outside counsel invoices, legal service request or intake functionality for capturing work coming in from the business, vendor and outside counsel management, workflow automation, and reporting and analytics that give legal leadership data to support resourcing and budget decisions. ELM is frequently confused with contract lifecycle management (CLM), but the two are distinct: ELM manages the operational infrastructure of a legal department as a whole, including matters, outside counsel relationships, billing, and intake, while CLM manages the contract lifecycle specifically, from drafting and negotiation through execution and renewal. Many ELM platforms integrate with or include a CLM module, but the categories address different scopes of legal department operations. Generative AI is increasingly embedded in ELM platforms to summarize matters and invoices, flag billing anomalies or guideline violations during invoice review, and surface recommended next steps, reducing the manual review historically required of legal operations teams.
