Alternative Legal Services Providers (ALSPs), sometimes called law companies, provide services traditionally performed by law firms or in-house counsel, typically work that does not constitute legal advice and is therefore not billed at traditional law firm rates. This category covers managed services, a catch-all for non-legal services delivered to law firms and in-house departments; flexible resourcing, which places lawyers and other legal professionals with law firms and legal departments on a temporary or contract basis; contract services, covering outsourced or managed-service contracting for high-volume, lower-complexity agreements such as NDAs; repapering, the process of updating large volumes of existing agreements in response to regulatory or market change, such as GDPR or the LIBOR phase-out; and eDiscovery services, where ALSPs provide outsourced document review and litigation support. Organizations turn to ALSPs for high-volume or lower-complexity work at lower cost than a law firm would charge, or for flexible access to legal talent without a permanent hire. Lower costs come from technology, process discipline, and labor arbitrage, often via delivery from lower-cost locations.
